Being Your True Self at Work: Why Inclusivity Matters

Inclusion is a word we often hear, but what does it really mean to be your true self at work — especially when being true to yourself makes you different? What if being yourself made others uncomfortable, or worse, was illegal in certain countries?

During a recent talk at Vestas, I shared my journey as a gay leader, not just to speak about my experiences, but to challenge others to reflect on their role in fostering inclusivity.

Coming Out — Again and Again

I’ve always known I was gay, but it took me 23 years to come out. When I finally told my mother, she said, “I am so happy you finally found the courage to be who you are.” But coming out wasn’t a one-time event — it’s something I’ve had to do repeatedly, even at work. Over the years, I’ve seen a range of reactions, from smiles to silence, and while it’s never easy, I do it because being true to myself is important.

Why It Matters at Work

You might wonder, why bring personal stories of identity into the workplace? Because being able to show up as your whole self at work is essential. At Vestas, we employ over 28,000 people across the globe, including LGBTQ+ individuals in countries where their identities may not be legally recognized. While we can’t change those laws, we can create an inclusive culture where everyone feels safe and valued.

Leading by Example

Inclusivity starts with us — leaders showing up authentically and leading by example. Simple shifts in language can also make a big difference. Instead of asking, “What does your husband do?” ask, “What does your partner do?” These small changes signal openness and acceptance, making it easier for others to feel comfortable being themselves.

Building a Culture of Belonging

Inclusion isn’t just about policies — it’s about creating a workplace where everyone, whether gay, trans, or non-binary, feels they belong. For those who may feel uncomfortable navigating these conversations, I encourage you to lean into that discomfort. It’s an opportunity to reflect and grow.

And for those struggling to be their true selves at work, I want you to know: I see you. I stand with you. You are not alone.

Moving Forward

Inclusion is a journey. We’ve made progress at Vestas, but there’s always more we can do. Let’s commit to using inclusive language, being mindful, and creating a workplace where everyone can show up as their whole selves. Together, we can build a place where everyone truly belongs.
